In VisualMusic we explore the way in which software can support the work of VJs and DJs, but:
Will VJ/DJ software be a threat or benefit to the creative work of VJs and DJs?.
Can automatically generated visuals be artistic?
Your opinion is welcome.
Will VJ/DJ software be a threat or benefit to the creative work of VJs and DJs?–depends how it is used but used well, I think it could take a lot of manual work out of the workload. The VJ/DJ can pre-program multiple aspects they would usually do more manually and this means they could have more time (potentially to come up with other more creative interactions).
there is never and end to ideas in djing and vjing and a new tool with new features can help to boost creativity.
Will VJ/DJ software is very good because simplifies the management of time the dj needs! It is useful besides to simplify the modification of the wisecrack during the change of the song! I have been very well… compliments!
If VJ/DJ software will be a threat or benefit to the creative work of VJs and DJs diped of the accessibility. The competition is the base of the musical flow and of any others kind of art movements, in particular the technology development is necessary for the future of Dj/Vj world. The idea i thnk can be winner.
Absolutely, in my opinion DJ Software is not a threat for DJ or VJ, because you can be creative also with it. For example if you use Serato, Rekordbox, Traktor or Ableton during your performance live, you are be able to create live remix. Moreover, if you are a DJ producer you can make new song with Ableton, Cubase, Traktor. So, personally I think that DJ software helps DJ in their job. Thanks. DJ Alain Marceau.
In my opinion a software like VisualMusic help the dj to create and tell a story through the dj set, and also can simplify the work between audio & visual,
Great idea! Want it for sure!
Each software should be a tool helping the artist to express and expand his ideas. VisualMusic, in that sense, it’s a nice tool, an instrument to combine music and visuals, to improve performances and to connect people to the artists.
If used properly it could be a great benefit, givin the opportunity to the live performer to have more control of its liveshow..
Will VJ/DJ software be a threat or benefit to the creative work of VJs and DJs?
Depends, for example like producer I work live in hardware but I complete my work with also software for doing some ambient sounds or some sample, I can’t work with my machines (It’s also for play my live project).
I think it’s a benefit, but if you are looking for something special you can’t escape from the hardware.
For DJing for me it’s a threat ’cause I’ve mount, unmount, stay attention and the sound is not like vinyl if I would play it… With cd player or vinyls is very more quickly to work than software for me. Software it’s a good choice for not spend so much and see if djing is your real passion (and than grow and spend up) or a mode or something for the moment. But I now for some people we are talking also about a philosophy.
In conclusion we could say that If you’ve got to go Rome the important is that you arrive: by train, by airplane or by car. You had only to choose your favorite way.
I think that not just it would benefit, I think it is its own natural creative evolution. It adds a dimention to the creation and to the show.
In my opinion generally visuals can distract and mislead people’s attention to the music in a club environment if not agreed before with the dj and his musical style, but if both vj estethic and dj’s music have empathy to each other, similar artistical views, taste and the performance gets prepared together before the night it can only empower the whole show…
It could be very usefull for those who like to express them selves in different ways
In my opinion creativity, coming from the artist, doesn’t rely on softwares or hardwares.
Using software gives you more time to concentrate on tricks and effects but you can be creative also using vinyls.
It’s merely a question of personal choices but still i think that the continuos improvement of the technologies and softwares for djs will definitely help us.
I believe that technology, if combined with good knowledge base on dj / vj, can certainly be a very useful tool at the professional level.
I only regret that many professionals abuse it to fill their gaps.
It would be nice to see more professionals give prestige and professionalism to dj / vj art.
Of course, in the sense that the artistic part has been coded before.
Indeed it cannot be considered a “performance” in the classic sense, but generative art is indeed …well…art..
will be an absolute benefit for visual audio performance
In my opinion there may be different approaches to softwere and different situations, where there must be a live performance interaction with live music and where there can be an automatic softwere, the difference is visible, I always prefer to interact directly with the music and use the softwere in manual mode
I think software as in all situations can be very useful, but it will always be better done with man and software. the software can create artistic visuals on its own
as I’m producert and dj i think that technologies offerts opportunity and new ways to make music so they are important for this job.
i’m not an expert of vj but i think also they can offer a good service and they can do a good work.
technology is a great opportunity, increasing creative possibilities. But basic, you must always be visionaries
As dj and electronic music producer it would be very great to can generate visuals within the music, a interesting way to totally express yourself.
Well two question in one…
For the first one, to be clear, yesss. A Vj software or combo Vj/DJ one iis great benefit to the creative work of vj/dj
1-electronic musics activate the imagination and perfect to come along with fantastic graphic arts or animations
2- graphic creation is a job on its own, and a dj, even when producer, does not have necessarily the ressources and the time to create efficient visual effects from scratch
As a result, a software comming with a bunch of tools and algorithms (to sync with beats, to generate visuals fitting the sound tone and freqsuencies) is a great help for djs which are not graphics specialists
Obviously, to answer to the question 2, the more expandable the software is, the more tuneable and scriptable its modules and scrpts are, the better it is: Users start with the base tools & presets, and then start to adapt them to their own needs, their resulting creations becoming more & more personnal.
I forgot to ask: do you planto release it under an open source license?
Thanks Bastien for your contribution. The software where VisualMusic will run is not open source. The licensing model is going to be defined in the last stage of the project. We’ll keep you updated!
I think the word “art”need crativity, ispiration, time and hard work…so it’s impossibile for the best program to do that, it could make entertainment, so that’s OK for having a very good time in a VJ/DJ session. They are two different thing, with their own application,.
